Canon: Pokemon Tabletop OC
Initial Canon Point: Just before discovering Ianthe's underground dungeon
True Canon Point: After freeing Jericho's hometown
Reserve Link: Here
Bottom Line: A formerly sheltered girl who can talk to inanimate objects making her way in the world and becoming a great deal more self-confident and aggressive.
History: Surolam comes from the Shikoku region, an island famous for its 88 shrines. The world overall is one where intelligent Pokemon are fairly common, and are slowly gaining rights to be equal to humans. A while ago, a Primeape was granted a trainer license and all the privileges that came with it. Decades later, Pokemon and humans will have become intermingled enough that, once again as in the old days, human-Pokemon mixed families become a common sight.
Of course, even in Surolam's time, Pokemon and human bloodlines had already mixed in some ways. Surolam's family is descended from a legendary dragon, Wyvereign, though their blood is mostly diluted and they barely know their history. Surolam didn't either, but she has the unique power to talk to inanimate objects. So she learned all this from Little Pummerin, a bell that's been in their family for a long time. She also learned just how much of her family's wealth was built on the blood and sweat of others.
That was the last straw she needed to break away from them. She'd been raised from youth to learn only what her parents wanted, and to secure a good future by marrying well. They had given her the best of accommodations for her disability, and accepted her when she told them that she was a girl, not a boy, but that only changed the nature of what they wanted her to learn, and the type of marriage they wanted her to make. They did plan on letting her choose her own husband, but none of the options they presented were pleasing to her, being far too condescending and ableist.
So she took many of her family's stolen treasures, the ones that wanted to find their old places or new homes, and hitched a ride on a ship. Eventually, she landed in Cianwood, where she sought out a textile company that she'd been told about by a spindle that once belonged to said company. It turned out that they were also recruiting trainers to travel around Shikoku in groups and challenge its newly established Pokemon League, and Surolam ended up brought into this journey.
It was then that she met the rest of her party, who would all become deeply important to her: Jericho Swift, a human rogue; Altair Azure, a construct and fellow objectspeaker; Jil Joti, a newly activated android; and Molly, a talking Meowstic pirate. Jil and Surolam instantly bonded as fellow people unsure about the world, and were both fascinated with experiencing everything it had to offer. Meanwhile, Altair and Surolam soon realized they shared the ability to talk to objects, and both they and their object companions became fast friends.
It took longer for her to warm up to Jericho, seeing as his first interaction with her was grabbing her arm without her permission when she already said she could handle herself, but she slowly warmed up to him after managing to break through his shell a bit. Molly and her kept a mostly professional relationship, but respected each other's skills fairly well. Surolam did end up courting all members of her initial party but Molly, though she got the furthest with Jil.
They had many adventures throughout Shikoku, and discovered many lost old places, bringing new life to them as well. They ended the curse on a crew of ghost pirates, freeing most of them to go to the afterlife, other than one Misdreavus named Stin who chose to stay behind and find a new purpose in life. They saved an ancient tree infected with a blight of vines, and let it reincarnate into a new sprout, which Ninviidost the Beedrill stayed behind to take care of. They found an underground dungeon guarded by several undead where the spirit of a Gallade warrior was trapped, and freed her spirit to walk once more. While most of the skeletons finally turned to dust as their service was ended, one of them, Jemyn Temyta, chose to stay behind and join Surolam's team. Most importantly for Surolam, she learned the full story of her heritage, and eventually faced down the maddened spirit of her ancestor, defeating him and gaining the favor of the orcs that had once worshipped him.
Throughout the adventure, they also met several other androids, from the same line as Jil but more specialized. They managed to gain the favor of Aditya, an idol hiding her robotic nature, by outperforming her, and in doing so were attacked and sabotaged by Antariksha, another android sibling who was an assassin. Jericho was immediately smitten with her, to Surolam's confusion and frustration, as he had brushed off her advances claiming he'd need much more time. However, she never responded much to his advances, being a professional. She did eventually admit to needing the party's help, and while Surolam was annoyed at her way of asking for it, did help her with the investigation, which turned out to tie in to the pirates who had taken over Jericho's hometown.
The party had also won the favor of the Greenshells, a group of Koopa bandits, though with the party's assistance they eventually moved away from constantly mugging random people. They helped the group find several ancient treasures from their ancestors, which had been left behind after they arrived in the world of Shikoku by accident. Out of gratitude, they ended up gifting their ancient flying ship to Molly, who gladly took command of it. In return, after discovering their ancient King trapped in a half-undead state, the group devised a ritual to fully resurrect him, with help from Henrietta, a Gardevoir from a Fairy-type village who joined the group to promote Pokemon rights.
Most recently, the group collected enough information on the pirates who'd invaded Jericho's hometown to be confident of taking them on. With help from the various groups they'd befriended, they took on the pirates and came out on top, while also using the blog Jemyn had set up soon after rejoining the outside world to livestream the takedown and the revelation of the corrupt companies and cops that had helped fund said pirates. At the moment she was taken, the group was enjoying a victory dinner and discussing how to properly clear up the town.
About:
Surolam is an empathetic person by nature, who wants everyone to have as much freedom as they desire. She cares deeply for inanimate objects as well, and does her best to treat them tenderly and not damage things unduly. Part of her still prefers to talk to them over people, partly because that's how things have been most of her life, and partly because hardly anyone else does. While she used to hide this power of hers more, she's much more open with it these days.
She wants to make a difference in the world, and believes strongly that her party has been able to do so, both in the places they've visited and the items she's found a place for. While she's left her old wealthy life behind, she does speak into more formalized speech patterns sometimes. She's soft-spoken and sweet-voiced by default, but can easily shift to making quiet, subtle threats in a similar tone. Her more actively aggressive side tends to come out in her hybrid and full dragon forms.
Transformation is almost second nature to her by now, and she often takes on her hybrid form as a default. Her draconic form, which is much larger and flight-capable, allows her to fully express her bloodthirsty and violent side, and she usually takes on that form in combat unless she wants to take advantage of people underestimating her. With Little Pummerin's help, she can also cast various curses to weaken her opponents, a tactic she uses to occasionally supplement her natural abilities.
Surolam loves fiercely and somewhat possessively. She cares deeply for the rest of her party, and reacts poorly to the idea of being separated from them. While she is polyamorous and is open to her partners having other lovers, being explicitly rejected in favor of another can bring out the worst in her. She mostly has this under control, at least enough not to get violent about it. She can also hold grudges quite strongly-she still resents Antariksha for everything she did working actively against the party for so long, and while she can be civil about it, she much prefers it when the other android is off on her own missions.
