NAME: Surolam Arcel
CANON: Original
CANON POINT: After freeing Jericho's hometown
AGE: 18
BACKGROUND:
-From an urban-fantasy world, where nonhumans are common, though there are a few more mysterious species. True dragons are thought to have disappeared from the world ages ago, or are even considered a myth by some. Sapient constructs are also considered more a theoretical thing currently.
-Surolam is the only daughter of a rich family, who was disappointed when they realized she was legally blind. Though as their heir, she was well-educated and provided with fairly good accommodations for her disability, she still felt stifled at times. They kept trying to find a match for her, but she was either rejected by most of the boys presented, or disliked their pity of her.
-Her objectspeaking power grew as she got older, and eventually she found that many of her parents' prized trophies had been stolen from their original owners, or wished to be put to use again. She also found Little Pummerin, who encouraged her most to make her own path. Eventually, taking a box of the things who wished to be freed, she ran away from home and set out on her own path. She would end up passing those things out to the many people she met on the journey, allowing them to be put to better use than they were before.
-While hiding out in a cafe, she ended up running into several other individuals who were also running away from things to some degree-Jericho, a human thief running from the pirates who had attacked his hometown; Altair, a construct and fellow objectspeaker running from his creator; and Jil, an android running away from the lab she was created and woke up in.
-They were recruited by a catfolk pirate named Molly seeking her own ship and crew, offering to vouch for them, and ended up forming an unofficial adventuring party. While at first it was an alliance of convenience, they did end up growing closer over time.
-For the first time in her life, Surolam found herself falling in love-with pretty much all her fellow traveling companions. Having gleaned all her information about courtship from tawdry romance novels she "read" in secret (more like having them read themselves to her), she was at times shy and teasing and at times forward and aggressive. Jil was the one who responded best to Surolam's advances, and they would eventually get engaged over the course of their journey.
-Surolam and Jil were both ignorant about the world in some way, and they learned together. But even Surolam had more formal education, and she was happy to pass on her various lessons in the arts to Jil. Surolam was always ready to stand at Jil's side, even when she was mocked by her more human-passing sisters, and was also happy to help her with minor repairs when necessary. They were also a terrifying combination in battle, with Surolam able to restrain people while Jil leapt down onto them from above. She was also the first one Surolam chose to share a bond with, making the two of them even more effective in combat and dancing together.
-Altair was immediately attractive to Surolam as a fellow objectspeaker, and she probably flirted with him the most after Jil. His responses to them were frankly confusing to her, at times seeming to be receptive and other times cold. This rift between them was probably at least partially because she didn't know of his construct nature, and still doesn't. Still, she considered him an important friend, and the two of them would often talk about their experiences with inanimate objects and how others regarded them. Altair also had a secret alter ego he called Lunar Hope, which could use various light-based attacks while Altair himself was an earth mage. Surolam at this point still doesn't know the two of them are the same person, since Lunar Hope wears a full-body suit covering all his features and has a completely different voice, and she's not aware of superhero tropes.
-Jericho was confusing to Surolam as well, due to the fact that he acted extremely secretive around everyone for a really long time. However, after seeing a shyer side of him, she started being attracted to him in a protective way, and would often try to stand between him and the constant nonhuman females that wanted to abduct him for their own purposes. Despite this, he still constantly spurned her, making her desperate to hold on to some sense of affection between them. After he started being more open about his past, things started becoming a little less awkward between them, and he even accepted being bonded to her, even if they didn't care about each other in the same way.
-Molly was someone Surolam interacted with somewhat less, the catfolk seeming to prefer Jericho's company most of the time. She was also on the shorter side even for a catfolk, making Surolam see her as less of a possible love interest, though eventually as she saw Molly's competence in battle and as a leader a slight attraction started developing there as well. She hasn't expressed this yet, mostly because she also still sees Molly as her "boss" to some degree.
-On the way, they encountered several other androids created by the same people who made Jil, mostly masquerading as normal humans, compared to Jil's obvious robotic nature. It turned out that Jil had been created with the ability to copy traits of her "siblings," and they slowly won said siblings over one by one, through contests or assisting them with their own tasks, to get their permission for Jil to gain traits from them.
-One of those siblings, a robotic assassin named Antariksha, caught Jericho's eye, despite her initial disinterest in his advances. However, perhaps out of some jealousy or curiosity about Jil and Surolam's relationship, she eventually started showing some sign of returning them-to the great frustration and jealousy of Surolam, who when approaching Jericho herself had been told he would need to take much longer to think about a relationship. Not only that, Antariksha had apparently tried to kill them right before she walked into their meeting on Jericho's arm.
-Little Pummerin tried to spur on this jealousy, encouraging Surolam to act in the image of Kiyohime, another of her line. She nearly went for it, but managed to hold herself back when she realized this line of reasoning would fail her. This led to a temporary time-out for him when she refused to listen to his advice for a while, though the two of them eventually made up.
-Their adventures took them to several ancient haunted places, and they managed to free the spirits trapped in those places each time. While most of them moved on, a ghostly pirate maiden named Stin and a skeleton knight named Jemyn Temyta decided to stay around for a while, wanting to experience more of the world. Jemyn also started a blog. They also eventually recruited an amnesiac ghost called Zojiik, who regained her memories over time, eventually recalling that she had died while trying to avenge her childrens' death at the hands of a man who had the police in his pocket. Coincidentally, this man turned out to also be involved with the pirates menacing Jericho's hometown, as well as someone Antariksha was stalking.
-Throughout their journey, the party had run-ins with several bandit groups, the Red Rooks and Greenshells. The Red Rooks were mostly human, with a few elven-blooded members, while the Greenshells were almost 100% turtlefolk. The party would eventually ally with the Greenshells to some extent, and at one point later in their journey worked together with them to restore an ancient Greenshell airship and get it running again.
-At one point, the party ended up in a fae village, where they encountered a fairy historian named Henrietta. She was immensely curious about the various folktales and history of the realm, but could not leave her village without a mortal escort. The party agreed to let her join them, and Stin began to develop a slight crush on her.
-After Henrietta joined, Surolam started desiring to seek out her heritage in earnest. Eventually, she found stories of an ancient god-king who was supposedly both dragon and human, but had those two parts of him split from each other. However, those two parts were supposedly both still present, but sealed away on a certain mountain. There was even a tribe of orcs who made a regular pilgrimage to said mountain, seeing the dragon as a god, and the party ended up joining in on the trip.
-It then turned out that Surolam's presence awoke both halves of the ancient king, and they tried to fight the party. However, Henrietta was able to appeal to the human half, making him remember his nobility and join in the trip to fight the dragon half. Even the orcs joined in after seeing Surolam's dragon form, and when the dragon half was defeated and reabsorbed by the human half, accepted her as their new goddess and vowed to assist her should they ever need it.
-Henrietta was also able to help when they discovered another cavern of undead, all turtlefolk like the Greenshells, and led by the legendary Shelled King, now in the form of a mindless skeleton. With Henrietta's help, they were able to devise a ritual to revive him, bringing great joy to the bandit group and securing their alliance.
-Eventually, the party finally made the journey to free Jericho's hometown. They had already taken down several of the pirates' conspirators in high places, and with an airship and the help of the Greenshells, Jil's more combative sisters, and the orc army, were able to do quite well in routing the pirates and making sure they would not have the support to return.
PERSONALITY:
-Sweet by nature, her voice has a mostly quiet tone. She has a strong sense of empathy, even for inanimate objects, and tends to rankle at the idea of anyone being kept captive in a situation they dislike by any means. She believes strongly that their party has made a difference to every person they've helped, and that each time she gave away one of her objects seeking a home she was able to bring joy to both the object and its new, or maybe old, owner.
-Prefers talking to inanimate objects over people, especially strangers. She feels that objects often have a far more complete view of what is going on, and she will always speak up for objects that feel unused or abandoned. While she used to conceal this power, she's become more used to sharing the information she gets from it now, even if it means people might not take her seriously.
-She hasn't completely left her old wealthy life behind. She still slips into formalized speech patterns sometimes. She's also been rich long enough that the concept of budgeting is still somewhat hard for her, though her party has helped her with understanding that more. Still, she tries not to use her last name so that people hopefully won't connect her to her family too easily.
-Has gotten more and more flirtatious over time. If she's attracted to someone, she'll let them know pretty quickly, unless there's some obvious competing interest. She greatly enjoys physical contact, both deep embraces and light, teasing touches.
-Has a bloodthirsty side that comes out more in dragon form. She's a far more physical fighter in this form, ready to sink her claws and fangs into her opponents or smack them with her tail. Part of it is her dragon form being more resilient and capable of dealing damage-even in human form she'll hit someone with Little Pummerin if they get too close in melee combat. However, she's definitely far more likely to revel in the combat and bloodshed when in dragon form.
-When in only human form, she's picked up the art of making quiet, subtle threats while smiling, though said threats get a lot more serious if the people she cares about are harmed. It's actually worked a few times to get weaker foes to simply back off, though nowadays she sometimes goes into full dragon form to get the full intimidation effect.
-Deeply protective/possessive of her loved ones. Surolam will not tolerate the people she cares about being threatened or abducted by others, and the best way to earn her ire is to do so, especially for the ones she sees as more vulnerable or flimsy.
-Her party is still extremely important to her, whether or not they're romantically involved. They were the first people she traveled with who (mostly) didn't deride her for her disability and recognized her abilities, and all the battles and dangers they faced together only brought them closer together. While she hopes she can find other people important to her, she's not about to give up traveling with them yet.
-Wants to make the world a better place. As mentioned above, believes that even the smallest act of kindness can be a large step in improving things for everyone. A natural optimist, she believes that with enough determination and her friends at her side, nothing can stop them.
-Jealousy can burn bright in her. While she's polyamorous by nature and doesn't mind her partners having multiple lovers of their own, being rejected in favor for another can anger her easily. She tries to control this side of her and not encourage it, but she's still having trouble balancing her expression of this emotion. While she's got enough control not to break down in public, she often ends up performing private displays of rage or sorrow where she thinks she won't be seen.
-Can hold on to grudges, though she tries not to let them affect her behavior too much. She still dislikes Antariksha, despite the android having acted as an ally to the party for a long time now. She will be civil around the android, for both Jericho and Jil's sakes, but is always relieved when she disappears off on another mission of her own.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
-Surolam is used to being blind by now, and can navigate fairly well in even low-light situations. Her hearing is also somewhat sharper.
-Surolam can talk to inanimate objects, and they respond to her. The older they are, the closer they are to sapience and understanding, though they do have their own personalities and loyalties, so electronic locks won't necessarily give up their combinations to her, and buildings won't just give information about the people who use them to her. Mostly this will probably be a flavor ability, unless she's specifically allowed to use it in an event to get extra information, and I won't have her use it on other people's personal items without their permission.
-When holding her bell, Little Pummerin, Surolam can curse her opponents in various ways. The current curses she knows are to make them clumsier, make them terrified of her enough to immediately flee, and to prevent them from moving. The curses often manifest in the form of ghostly chains that trip or bind opponents.
-If Surolam cares deeply enough for someone, and they in return, and they both agree, she can form a bond between them. It allows her to increase their accuracy and damage in combat, and increases her own combat abilities when one of her bonded is attacked. Two bonded people can also communicate wordlessly, sense each others' direction, and recognize the other in any circumstance. Even if a bond is broken, they retain the abilities of communication and recognition. Naturally, I would not use this ability without full permission.
-Surolam has fully unlocked her dragon heritage, and can transform into a golden dragon. In this form, she is capable of flight despite being wingless, and her scales are rough enough to scratch if rubbed the wrong way. Her sense of smell also gets much stronger, allowing her to even track people by scent. She also has some limited control over the air, such that she can resist being forcibly directed by the wind. She is strong enough to carry up to two average-sized people in this form as well. She is also capable of partial transformations, growing only teeth/claws/horns/tail/scales, or any combination of the aforementioned.
INVENTORY:
-Pachyderm-tooth: Her white cane, made of pure ivory. It also has a golden ring embedded near the top. Wants to do its best to help guide her, though it's fairly young.
-Little Pummerin: A blue metal bell, just the right size and weight to hang from the side of her belt. A relatively old object, who knows about Surolam's heritage and constantly urges her to express it.
